Pretzels for Prayers-Originally made
of plain bread dough, soft pretzels have had a place
in history since 610 A.D. when a monk in southern France
or northern Italy experimented with some left over bread
dough. He twisted the dough into the shape of a child's
arms folded in prayer. He gave the "pretiola"
as a reward to children who successfully learned their
prayers. Pretiola is Latin for reward. The pretiola
found its way over to Austria and Germany where it became
known as the pretzel.
Wedding Wishes-A wood cut dating from
1614 A.D. shows the pretzel being used to "tie
the knot" between two royal families. From this
stemmed a tradition of wishing on a pretzel at weddings.
The pretzel was held on one side by the bride and on
the other by the groom. They would make a wish and pull,
just as is done with a wishbone today. Whoever pulled
the bigger half of the pretzel would have their wish
granted. It was thought that since both bride and groom
were most likely wishing for happiness together, both
would get their wish.
Pretzels Save Vienna-Around 1510 A.D.
the Turks were trying to conquer the walls of Vienna
but were unsuccessful. Waiting for the cover of darkness,
they attempted to tunnel under the walls. Some Viennese
pretzel bakers were awake baking in the middle of the
night, and heard the digging and scraping of the Turks.
They alerted the Viennese people, who attacked the Turks
in their tunnels and won the battle, saving their city.
The king bestowed upon the pretzel bakers a special
coat of arms, to thank them for their bravery. The shield
was decorated with a charging lion and a pretzel, which
later became the baker's emblem that is still used today.
